What Is the CDS Exam?
CDS stands for Combined Defence Services. It is a national entrance exam organised by UPSC — the Union Public Service Commission — twice every year. This exam is the official gateway for graduates who want to become officers in the Indian Armed Forces.
Candidates who clear the CDS written exam are then called for an SSB Interview — Services Selection Board — where their leadership ability, mental strength, and overall personality are carefully assessed by a panel of experts.
After clearing both stages successfully, selected candidates join one of these prestigious training academies:
- Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun
For candidates who wish to serve in the Indian Army as commissioned officers. - Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala
For candidates who want to join the Indian Navy. - Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad
For candidates aiming to serve as officers in the Indian Air Force. - Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai
Open to both men and women graduates for Short Service Commission.

These centres are led by experienced teachers and, in many cases, retired defence officers who bring genuine military knowledge and insight to their students.
How to Prepare for CDS — Smart Tips
Whether you are studying at a coaching centre or preparing independently, these simple strategies will help you prepare more effectively:
- Understand the Full Syllabus First
Before opening any book, read the official CDS syllabus carefully. Know which topics are included and how many marks each section carries. - Build a Consistent Daily Routine
Fix a daily study schedule and follow it every day. Give proper time to all three subjects. Morning study sessions tend to be the most productive. - Read a Newspaper Every Morning
General Knowledge grows through daily reading. A national newspaper keeps you updated on current events, government decisions, and defence-related news. - Practise Previous Year Question Papers
Solving past CDS papers is one of the smartest preparation strategies. It shows you the exact style of questions and helps you manage your exam time.
