NDA Written Exam Pattern & Details

The National Defence Academy (NDA) Exam is conducted by UPSC twice a year for admission to the Army, Navy, and Air Force wings of NDA & Indian Naval Academy (INA).

📌 GAT Sections:

  • English: 200 marks
  • General Knowledge (GK): 400 marks (Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Current Affairs, General Science)

📌 Marking Scheme:

  • Mathematics: +2.5 marks for each correct answer, -0.83 marks for each wrong answer.
  • GAT: +4 marks for each correct answer, -1.33 marks for each wrong answer.

SSB Interview for NDA – Complete Process & Stages

The Services Selection Board (SSB) Interview is a five-day selection process conducted for candidates who qualify for the NDA written exam. It is designed to assess a candidate’s intelligence, personality, leadership, and officer-like qualities (OLQs).


The SSB Interview is conducted in two stages:

➡ Stage 1: Screening Test (Day 1)

📌 Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test

  • Verbal & Non-verbal reasoning
  • 50-60 questions in each section
    📌 Picture Perception & Description Test (PPDT)
  • A picture is shown for 30 seconds
  • Candidates write a story based on the picture
  • Group discussion on the story
    📌 Result of Stage 1 – Candidates who clear Stage 1 move to Stage 2. Others are sent back the same day (Screened Out).

➡ Stage 2: Psychological Tests & GTO Tasks (Day 2 to Day 4)

📌 Day 2: Psychological Tests
Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) – Write stories on 12 pictures shown for 30 sec each.
Word Association Test (WAT) – 60 words shown, candidates write sentences in 15 sec per word.
Situation Reaction Test (SRT) – 60 real-life situations given, responses must be written quickly.
Self-Description Test (SDT) – Write about strengths, weaknesses, and others’ opinions about yourself.

📌 Day 3 & 4: Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks
Group Discussion (GD) – Discussion on current affairs and abstract topics.
Group Planning Exercise (GPE) – Candidates solve a given military/logistical problem as a team.
Progressive Group Tasks (PGT) – Solving obstacle-based tasks in teams.
Half Group Tasks (HGT) – Similar to PGT but in smaller groups.
Command Task – Each candidate acts as a commander and leads a team to solve an obstacle.
Individual Obstacles – Completing a series of physical challenges like rope climbing, jumping, etc.
Lecturette – A short speech on a given topic within 3 minutes.
Final Group Task (FGT) – Last team-based task, testing coordination and leadership.


➡ Stage 3: Personal Interview (Day 2 to Day 4)

  • One-on-one interaction with an interviewing officer (IO).
  • Questions on personal life, academics, general knowledge, and defence-related topics.
  • Focuses on confidence, clarity of thought, and decision-making skills.

➡ Stage 4: Conference (Day 5)

  • Candidates meet all SSB assessors for the final evaluation.
  • Final decision made based on Psychological Tests + GTO Tasks + Personal Interview.
  • Candidates are either Recommended or Not Recommended.

SSB Interview Marks & Selection Criteria

📌 NDA Written Exam: 900 Marks
📌 SSB Interview: 900 Marks (Psychological + GTO + Interview)
📌 Final Merit List: Based on Written Exam (900) + SSB (900) = 1800 Marks
