Complete NDA Selection Process: From Written Exam to SSB Interview
The NDA Exam is one of the most popular defence entrance exams in India. It is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to select candidates for training at the National Defence Academy.
If you want to join the Indian Armed Forces as an officer, understanding the NDA selection process is very important. The process mainly includes two major stages: the written exam and the SSB interview.
1. Written Exam
The first stage of the NDA selection process is the written examination. This exam tests a candidate’s knowledge, problem-solving ability, and understanding of basic subjects.
The written exam consists of two papers:
Paper 1: Mathematics
The Mathematics paper is designed to test your numerical ability, analytical thinking, and understanding of mathematical concepts. It mainly covers topics studied in Class 11 and Class 12 mathematics.
Candidates must solve multiple-choice questions that require both accuracy and speed. Regular practice and strong basics are very important for performing well in this section.
Paper 2:General Ability Test(GAT)
The General Ability Test (GAT) checks a candidate’s English language skills and general knowledge. This paper helps assess whether the candidate has the awareness and communication ability required for defence services.
The GAT paper is divided into two parts.
Part A: English
Part A focuses on testing a candidate’s understanding of the English language. The aim of this section is to evaluate how well a student can read, understand, and use English correctly.

Part B: General Knowledge

The General Ability Test plays an important role in the overall performance of the NDA Exam. Scoring well in both Part A and Part B increases your chances of moving to the next stage, the SSB interview, and eventually joining the National Defence Academy.
2. SSB Interview
Candidates who pass the written exam are called for the SSB interview (Services Selection Board). This stage is designed to test the personality, leadership qualities, confidence, and communication skills of a candidate.
The SSB interview usually takes about 4–5 days and includes several activities.
Screening Test
On the first day, candidates go through a screening test that includes intelligence tests and picture perception discussions.
Psychological Tests
These tests help assess the candidate’s thinking ability, decision-making skills, and personality traits.
Group Tasks
Candidates participate in group discussions, group planning exercises, and outdoor tasks that evaluate teamwork and leadership.
Personal Interview
In this round, the interviewer asks questions about your education, interests, goals, and general awareness.
Conference Round
The final stage is the conference, where the panel reviews the overall performance of the candidate before making the final recommendation.
Final Merit List
After completing the written exam and the interview stage, the final step in the NDA Exam selection process is the final merit list. This list decides which candidates are selected for training at the National Defence Academy.
The Union Public Service Commission prepares the merit list based on the overall performance of candidates in both the written examination and the SSB interview.
Medical Examination
After the SSB interview, candidates must also clear a medical examination. This test ensures that candidates meet the physical and medical standards required for training in the armed forces. Only those candidates who are medically fit and have good scores are included in the final merit list.
