What is the Service Selection Board (SSB)?
The Service Selection Board (SSB) is the organization responsible for selecting officers for the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force. It conducts a detailed interview process to evaluate whether a candidate has the qualities required to become an officer in the armed forces.
The board uses a standard evaluation system to assess candidates through multiple tests and activities. These tests help examiners judge the personality, intelligence, leadership ability, and decision-making skills of each candidate.
Age Eligibility, Gender Criteria and Marital Status
- Indian Military Academy (IMA) – Only unmarried male applicants are eligible. The age requirement is between 19 and 24 years.
- Indian Naval Academy (INA) – Applications are accepted only from unmarried male candidates who are 19 to 22 years old.
- Air Force Academy (AFA) – Candidates should be 19 to 23 years of age. Those holding a valid Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) issued by DGCA, India may receive age relaxation up to 26 years.
- Officers’ Training Academy (OTA – SSC Course for Men) – Male candidates, whether married or unmarried, can apply. The age limit for this entry is 19 to 25 years.
- Officers’ Training Academy (OTA – SSC Women Non-Technical Course) – Eligible applicants include unmarried women, widows without children who have not remarried, and divorced women without children who have not remarried and possess valid divorce documents. The required age range is 19 to 25 years.
